He made it dramatic to make the event the talk of the town but ended the stint abruptly when the presenter of the show announced that Sorcar had exceeded his allotted prime time. Concerned audience members made a slew of calls to check on the girl's safety. The next day, the newspapers reported that the girl was safe and sound, prompting people to rush to purchase tickets for the show. Sorcar became an overnight sensation in the US, raking in wads of cash, and his shows were well-received by the public.

I would do a lot of simple effects that had a HUGE impact on the audience - and that’s why I was more popular with the crowds. A lay person (someone not familiar with magic and its secrets) doesn’t really care about how hard a certain sleight is to perform or that you can do a certain difficult move really well. They care about the overall effect and how it makes them feel. I would always use effects that packed a huge punch, or, even better, something I could do in the spectator’s hand! People go absolutely nuts when you give them one sponge rabbit and then, when they open their hand, they actually have two (or more)! I’ve had people scream and throw the rabbits in the air they were so surprised. Someone screaming in delight tends to draw attention and then everyone around wants to be part of the group where that kind of thing is going on. That is what made me stand out at our events. Some guys can make the really difficult look easy. I made the easy look spectacular!

Dai Vernon is considered the de facto master of close-up magic. Then I would ask each one of them for a budget and get the one that seemed better according to price and quality.

David Copperfield (15 years ago... that is!). Look, I love the guy, but he seems to have given up and is now going through the motions. He hasn't updated his act, outside of an Ali Bongo inspired tie floating thing.
Recently I've read he's signed a new deal to have his own theatre in Vegas, so that might bring some new effects to the stage. I really hope so, the guy really brought magic to the mainstream audience. It's just a pity that he couldn't maintain it. Sorry, I'm harping on the negatives here.

- Doug Henning, the hippy version of David Copperfield. Was the first to do magic on TV in a mainstream way. (Oh, and DC may have used some of the same "camera" principles....)
- Greg Frewin, I love this guy.

For me, it's Joshua Jay. This guy is brilliant. Beyond brilliant, honestly one of the brightest people in magic. He doesn't do stupid tricks for the sake of it, he really thinks through his effects and, boy, does it show. I have had the pleasure of seeing him perform live once and his technique is beyond inspiring, it's truly magical.
He doesn't just "perform" magic, he is a storyteller. Which I think a lot of magicians forget these days, they think doing a "magic trick" is all that is needed. But, first and foremost, magic is entertainment. So, entertain. An Josh Jay does that.
Honorable mentions
- Michael Ammar, I grew up with this guy and own a few of his effects and books. A true professional in every sense of the word. He's a bit dated now, but -wow- he still has it (if you ask me!).
Mentalism
This is tough, I was going to say Max Maven ... but, sorry, Derren Brown has really taken this particular type of magic to a completely different level.
I'll admit now, he can be a bit boring to watch for extended periods of time. He can ramble on about silly things, and from a "magic" stand point - he can sometimes prove his prediction a bit too much ... which completely negates the fact that he did predict it.
But, that's just nitpicking things. He is entertaining, always baffles me ... and his lottery prediction is completely captivating and inexplainable. I still don't know how he did it (I have some ideas...)
